Walnut Hill

Walnut Hill is a unique neighborhood located in the heart of West Philadelphia. It is one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in West Philadelphia, with a population of African American, Caucasian, Asian, and West African residents. Developed initially as a bedroom community for Center City’s workforce, Walnut Hill is a thriving community of 8,643 residents, with the 52nd Street commercial corridor, known as “West Philly’s Main Street,” as its western gateway.City of Philadelphia

Residents recognize Walnut Hill’s many strengths: its rich history, friendly atmosphere, elegant rowhomes, and excellent access to public transportation. Walnut Hill is home to the first high school built west of the Schuylkill River, the first building designed for television broadcasting, and the last place where the noted activist and artist Paul Robeson lived. Many long-term residents can share their memories of the neighborhood from more than fifty years ago. Houses are impressively large, well kept, and architecturally ornate. Due to the Market-Frankford El stations and the many bus routes that pass through the area, it is possible to travel from Walnut Hill to anywhere in the Philadelphia area rapidly and easily. The neighborhood’s assets make it an extremely attractive place to live, work, and play.

Today, Walnut Hill is a community that thrives despite its challenges. Nevertheless, the neighborhood faces significant pressures from gentrification, crime, poverty, property deterioration, and poorly performing schools. The objective of The Enterprise Center CDC is to amplify residents’ voices as they create a set of shared priorities for improving the neighborhood.
