School Food 101: A Community Discussion with Results

On November 15th over 100 parents, students, educators, and community members came out to Henry C. Lea Elementary School to learn the basics about the school food system. Topics included where school food comes from, how it is prepared, and efforts to bring farm-fresh food to neighborhood schools. The panelists were Lisa Jones and Amy Virus from SDP Division of Food Service, Deb Bentzel of Fair Food, and Kathy Fisher of PCCY. A number of questions were generated by the audience and we will continue to work on getting them answered and disseminated.

After the School Food 101 event the School District of Philadelphia Division of Food Service added two additional West Philadelphia High Schools Paul Robeson and Parkway West to Eat Fresh Here. This farm to school program incorporates locally grown fruits and vegetables to school meals. Eat Fresh Here is managed by the School District of Philadelphia Division of Food Services, Fair Food and The Food Trust.

Youth Business Showcase a Success

On November 30th, The Enterprise Center held a student business exhibition to highlight the success and importance of youth entrepreneurship in Philadelphia. The Executive Incubator business launch party, “Lights, Camera, Business: Teens in Action” was an opportunity for teen entrepreneurs to showcase their businesses while selling their goods and services. Just over 150 community members, family and friends came out to support these teens as they introduced their businesses to the public for the first time. Businesses included: baking, jewelry, candy dolls, buttons, and clothing, to hair accessories, barbering, neighborhood cleaning, modeling and photography. The room was bubbling with commerce and excitement as products and services were purchased. Over the course of the evening, a raffle made eleven people the lucky recipients of products and services that the teens either made or sold. We are grateful for all of their wonderful work, and wish them the best as Brian leaves to work for World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WOOF), and Evan heads off to law school at Michigan State.

We are also very sad to be saying goodbye to Managing Director Imanni Wilkes, who will be departing for a new life in Moscow. Imanni has been with TEC-CDC for over six years, and was instrumental in empowering the Walnut Hill community to plan for its own future. Imanni’s passion, leadership, and wealth of knowledge will be missed, but the legacy of her work will continue as TEC-CDC continues to focus on innovative community solutions for the future of West Philadelphia. Imanni’s last day will be August 19th.

On July 16th, Walnut Hill Community Association (WHCA) held their 3rd annual Community Day block party. Over 800 neighbors enjoyed a day of family fun, including singing and dance performances, a farmers’ market with produce from the Walnut Hill Community Farm, activities for kids, a health fair, clothing donations, and free food. WHCA celebrated its 50th year of service to the neighborhood with a tribute to the Association’s four past presidents and memories shared by long-term residents. During Community Day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for two new community gardens funded by a Vital Neighborhoods Initiative grant from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, PA Senator Vincent Hughes, and Preservation Alliance Executive Director John Andrew Gallery were special guests in attendance for the ribbon cutting.
For the second year in a row, as the West Philadelphia community convener of the Philadelphia Urban Food and Fitness Alliance (PUFFA), TEC-CDC is managing a summer internship program that trains high school students to advocate for healthy lifestyles in their schools and communities. In addition to representing PUFFA at national food justice conferences in Philadelphia and Detroit, this year’s crop of students worked with dozens of food and fitness-related organizations in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia including Mariposa Food Coop, Fairmount Park Horticultural Center, UC Green, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Philadelphia Independence (professional soccer team), Fair Food, Reading Terminal Market, Philabundance, SHARE, Common Market, Teens for Good, Food Trust, and Zahav restaurant.

The internship will end with a two-week media camp at WHYY where the students will produce their own healthy community public service announcements. Stay tuned for information on where you can view their videos. Check out the summer photo album at www.tinyurl.com/PUFFAyouth. This six-week course allows students to explore a neighborhood in West Philadelphia, develop relationships with community stakeholders, identify resources, and choose an issue to research and address in the community. Students learn community building, asset mapping, marketing, interviewing skills, and public speaking. The Leaders will present their findings during final presentations held August 10-11 at the University of Pennsylvania.
Our water system for the farm is up-and-running! Thanks to SEPTA, Philly Rooted, Philadelphia Water Department, Philly Stake, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and UC Green for allowing us to develop this innovative and sustainable concept. Here’s how it works: 1) It rains. Water is collected from the 46th Street Station on SEPTA’s Market Frankford Line. ‎2) Water is piped around the side of the station wall (piping installed by SEPTA just for this project). ‎3) Water flows into two 1,100 gallon cisterns. ‎4) Our solar-powered water pump takes water up to the farm beds via underground piping installed thanks to our Philadelphia Health Corps volunteers. ‎5) Water flows to a tap at the farm-bed level. ‎6) Finally, we water the vegetables! For more information on the water system or the Walnut Hill Community Farm, please contact Bryan Fenstermaker at bfenstermaker@theenterprisecentercdc.org or 215-895-4020.

Our youth growers are selling fresh vegetables grown at the Walnut Hill Community Farm, supplemented with produce from the Common Market, every Tuesday and Friday from 3:00-6:00 PM, on the farm at 4610 Market Street. They are also selling every other Wednesday on the lower concourse level of SEPTA’s building at 1234 Market Street, in Center City, alongside cooking demonstrations by Penn State’s Nutrition Links. The next Center City stand will be on Wednesday July 13th from 11:00 AM-1:30 PM. Please come out, show your support, and take home some fresh, delicious produce.
