ImanniFarewells…

This month TEC-CDC is bidding farewell to several employees. We will be losing our two AmeriCorps VISTAs, Evan George and Brian Mallon, who are completing their year of service. We are grateful for all of their wonderful work, and wish them the best as Brian leaves to work for World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WOOF), and Evan heads off to law school at Michigan State.

We are also very sad to be saying goodbye to Managing Director Imanni Wilkes, who will be departing for a new life in Moscow. Imanni has been with TEC-CDC for over six years, and was instrumental in empowering the Walnut Hill community to plan for its own future. Imanni’s passion, leadership, and wealth of knowledge will be missed, but the legacy of her work will continue as TEC-CDC continues to focus on innovative community solutions for the future of West Philadelphia. Imanni’s last day will be August 19th.

For inquiries relating to the Walnut Hill Street Team, please direct them to Lorna Peterson at lpeterson@theenterprisecentercdc.org or 215-895-4040. For all other inquiries, please direct them to Greg Heller at gheller@theenterprisecentercdc.org or 215-895-4075.

Over 800 neighbors enjoyed a day of family fun, including singing and dance performances, a farmers’ market with produce from the Walnut Hill Community Farm, activities for kids, a health fair, clothing donations, and free food. WHCA celebrated its 50th year of service to the neighborhood with a tribute to the Association’s four past presidents and memories shared by long-term residents. During Community Day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for two new community gardens funded by a Vital Neighborhoods Initiative grant from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, PA Senator Vincent Hughes, and Preservation Alliance Executive Director John Andrew Gallery were special guests in attendance for the ribbon cutting. For the second year in a row, as the West Philadelphia community convener of the Philadelphia Urban Food and Fitness Alliance (PUFFA), TEC-CDC is managing a summer internship program that trains high school students to advocate for healthy lifestyles in their schools and communities. In addition to representing PUFFA at national food justice conferences in Philadelphia and Detroit, this year’s crop of students worked with dozens of food and fitness-related organizations in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia including Mariposa Food Coop, Fairmount Park Horticultural Center, UC Green, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Philadelphia Independence (professional soccer team), Fair Food, Reading Terminal Market, Philabundance, SHARE, Common Market, Teens for Good, Food Trust, and Zahav restaurant.

The internship will end with a two-week media camp at WHYY where the students will produce their own healthy community public service announcements. Stay tuned for information on where you can view their videos. Check out the summer photo album at www.tinyurl.com/PUFFAyouth. LeadersLeaders of Change

TEC-CDC and University City High School partnered for a second year to transform 65 students into change agents in their community through the Leaders of Change summer enrichment program. This six-week course allows students to explore a neighborhood in West Philadelphia, develop relationships with community stakeholders, identify resources, and choose an issue to research and address in the community. Students learn community building, asset mapping, marketing, interviewing skills, and public speaking. The Leaders will present their findings during final presentations held August 10-11 at the University of Pennsylvania. To learn more about Leaders of Change or to attend their final presentations, please contact Aleea Slappy at aslappy@theenterprisecentercdc.org or 215-895-4010.

Lots of Great Presspress

We are grateful for all of the wonderful media attention we have received recently, allowing us to spread the word about our programs and initiatives in the community. On July 5th  the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Alia Conley wrote a great article on the Street Team, quoting Team members Tiffany Spraggins and Lydia Connelly: Click to view article.

The Walnut Hill Community Farm was a stop on the West Philadelphia Farm-to-Table Trolley Tour, organized by University City District. Reporter Dea Adria Mallin featured the farm in her piece in the University City Review on June 29th: http://ucreview.com/west-philly-fare-a-farmtotable-trolley-tour-p2816-1.htm.

On June 24th NBC’s Today Show ran a segment on KaBOOM! and the Walnut Hill Community Playground, including appearances from Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, and Walnut Hill residents Horace Patterson, Deloris Fisher, and Earl Williams. Summer Business & Leadership Camp a Success

TECLAB

More than 75 eager high school students attended The Enterprise Center Leaders About Business (TECLAB) weeklong business and leadership development camp. The students experienced a dynamic array of speakers from the fields of business and social leadership, including Haile Johnston, the State Director of the Center for Progressive Leadership and co-founder of the Common Market; Patrick Walsh, Vice-President of Marketing for Villa Urban Lifestyles; and representatives from Wells Fargo who led workshops on financial literacy and credit. Throughout the week students developed their own business plans and marketing strategies, utilizing the resources and entrepreneurial expertise of The Enterprise Center. Sustainable Water System Up-and-RunningWater

Our water system for the farm is up-and-running! Thanks to SEPTA, Philly Rooted, Philadelphia Water Department, Philly Stake, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and UC Green for allowing us to develop this innovative and sustainable concept. Here’s how it works: 1) It rains. Water is collected from the 46th Street Station on SEPTA’s Market Frankford Line. ‎2) Water is piped around the side of the station wall (piping installed by SEPTA just for this project). ‎3) Water flows into two 1,100 gallon cisterns. ‎4) Our solar-powered water pump takes water up to the farm beds via underground piping installed thanks to our Philadelphia Health Corps volunteers. ‎5) Water flows to a tap at the farm-bed level. ‎6) Finally, we water the vegetables! For more information on the water system or the Walnut Hill Community Farm, please contact Bryan Fenstermaker at bfenstermaker@theenterprisecentercdc.org or 215-895-4020.
